Britain's Great Cathedrals with Tony Robinson
Canterbury Cathedral
Season 1 Episode 2 of 6
Built more than 1,400 years ago, Canterbury Cathedral is both a holy place and a World Heritage site. It is the 'mother church' for more than 85 million people, and one of the biggest tourist attractions in the UK with nearly a million visitors a year. Tony tells the tale of the cathedral's founding and how, after the cathedral burnt down, it was rebuilt by the Normans as a symbol of their power. He also explores how it became wealthy thanks to its role as a major site of pilgrimage following the infamous murder of Archbishop Thomas Becket
Britain's Great Cathedrals with Tony Robinson airs on Channel 5 +1 at 4:50 AM, Thursday 7 November. (Subtitles, repeat, sign language.)
