Ruth Goodman, Alex Langlands and Peter Ginn try to increase their farm's productivity using methods from 1943, when Britain suffered its worst food shortages of the Second World War. The trio recruit youngsters to join their version of a Children's Harvest Camp, a wartime initiative that put school pupils to work on farms during times of urgent need, and Alex and Peter use 1940s technology to produce a hay crop from grass in the churchyard. Ruth makes a dress from old flour sacks as she discovers the methods women used to look good during the rationing era, and visits a party at the village hall, where she and Alex try their hand at jiving
