Dead Man Talking _ The Secret Notebook of Thomas Hardy

of 10

Dr Bill Greenslade examines the treasure trove of secret notebooks kept by author Thomas Hardy, which were to have been burned upon his death but miraculously survived, one of which is to be published for the first time. The volume explores how the Victorian writer took newspaper stories of the time as inspiration for classics such as The Mayor of Casterbridge, born from an item about wife sales, and how the scene of a horse's death in Tess of the D'Urbervilles was prompted by a report of a coach crash

Thomas Hardy - Homeground airs on BBC Four HD at 2:30 AM, Thursday 7 November. (Subtitles.)
