The First Georgians: The German Kings Who Made Britain
Season 1 Episode 2 of 3
Dr Lucy Worsley examines how George II had to adapt to a growing middling rank in society - who were no longer content with being subjects. Affairs of the state began to be openly discussed in coffee houses, and the king and his ministers were mocked in satire - with George becoming an easy target due to his frequent absences. His wife Caroline went on to popularise a medical breakthrough against smallpox, but it was their son Frederick Prince of Wales who had the popularity the monarchy needed to survive in the modern era
The First Georgians: The German Kings Who Made Britain airs on BBC Four at 2:30 AM, Wednesday 16 July. (Subtitles, audio description.)
