What’s going on at the big wedding in Andor season 2?

By Richard Edwards

Everyone loves a good wedding, right? Unfortunately, the celebration that takes place during the opening three episodes of Andor season 2 is so tense it puts UK soap operas to shame – in fact, it’s not clear if anyone’s actually enjoying themselves.

That’s mainly because mother of the bride Senator Mon Mothma (Genevieve O’Reilly) is moonlighting as one of the founders of the Rebel Alliance, and some of the risky deals she’s made to further the cause are coming home to roost. Indeed, her prickly associate Luthen Rael (Stellan Skarsgård) is particularly worried that certain wedding guests could bring his intricately constructed house of cards tumbling down.

Here we explain what’s going on at Andor season 2’s big shindig and the impact it could have on the show’s final season. Not tuned in yet? Here are 7 reasons why you should watch Andor, even if you don’t like Star Wars.

Spoiler warning: Proceed with caution if you’re yet to watch the first three episodes of Andor season 2, now available on Disney+.

Who’s getting married in the first three episodes of Andor season 2?

This is the arranged marriage of Leida (Bronte Carmichael), teenage daughter of Chandrilan senator Mon Mothma (Genevieve O’Reilly) and her husband, Perrin Fertha (Alastair Mackenzie), to Stekan (Finley Glasgow), son of Davo Sculdun (Richard Dillane) and his wife Runai (Rosalind Halstead). Their match is entirely political – wealthy banker Davo Sculdun likes the idea of joining one of Chandrila’s most respected families, while Mon Mothma sees Sculdun as little more than a thug.

Nonetheless, in Andor’s first season she agrees to arrange a meeting between the two children in exchange for the loan she needs to cover up the disappearance of 400,000 credits from her bank account – money she’s using to fund the nascent Rebel Alliance under the cover of a charitable foundation.

Who else is on the guest list at the wedding?

Chandrilan weddings are long-running, multi-day events, and this one is a particularly lavish affair. This party for the ages is clearly the place to be seen in Chandrilan society, and the guest list reflects this. In addition to the “intended maiden” (bride), groom and their respective parents, the party is attended by well-wishers on both sides of the Imperial/Rebel divide. This ups the tension somewhat in comparison to the average celebration of marriage, especially as the walls in this particular corner of the Star Wars galaxy tend to have ears.

As Mon Mothma’ cousin, Vel Sartha (Faye Marsay), is – unsurprisingly – in attendance, though the fact she’s also a Rebel operative makes things rather awkward. As does the surprise arrival of Rebel spymaster Luthen Rael (Stellan Skarsgård) and his trusted number two Kleya Marki (Elizabeth Dulau) in their professional capacity as antique dealers, attending at the request of Davo Sculdun. And then there’s Tay Kolma (Ben Miles), a long-standing friend of Mon who’s starting to regret helping her out of a financial hole.

What’s Tay’s issue with Mon?

It’s not traditionally the done thing to talk business with the bride’s mother while the nuptials are ongoing, but Tay has some serious beef with the honourable senator. Since helping her set up her charitable foundation a year earlier – and arranging the deal with Davo Sculdun – he’s become increasingly concerned about the associated risks to his own banking business. He’s also annoyed that Mon hasn’t been returning his calls, and is well aware of the irony that the Rebel activity he’s assisted from afar has soured his investments.

The fact that Tay’s asking for money – along with the amount of time he’s been spending with Davo – is particularly concerning to Luthen in the Andor season 2 story. Not only could Tay become a liability to the Rebel cause; however much they pay him, he knows too much for them to ever be entirely safe.

What is Tay Kolma’s fate?

That’s unclear but, seeing as the replacement driver transporting him away from the wedding is known Rebel agent Cinta Kaz (new Doctor Who companion Varada Sethu returns to the Andor season 2 cast as Vel’s ex), his future prospects do not look good.

Now that her employer, Luthen – a man who contemplated killing Cassian to preserve his cover in season 1 – has identified Tay as a threat to the secrecy of his operation, this Chandrilan banker would appear to be worryingly expendable…
