One Night is the latest gritty drama to air on ITV but it’s not its first rodeo – it was previously added and removed from streaming service Paramount+.

Jodie Whittaker, 43, stars in the dark and psychological mini-series and, those who’ve been luckily enough to already see it, want more.

ITV is now airing One Night and it follows three women whose friendship was almost destroyed by the tragic events of…one night.

Here, we take a look at how you can watch it and why exactly One Night was ditched by Paramount+.

One Night on ITV: What is the plot

One night, 20 years ago, an awful tragedy unfolded in a small coastal town in Australia. Exactly what happened remains a forgotten mystery, with the community deliberately forgetting it.

The ITV drama centres around three friends; Simone, Tess and Hat. Their friendship was all but torn to shreds by the events of that night and it also saw Tess emigrating to the UK.

Two decades on, the women are reunited when Tess decides it’s finally time to put the past to bed and return to Australia. She also brings her wife and two children along for the ride. Hat has never left the town and Simone has moved back from Sydney to care for her ailing father.

With Tess, Simone and Hat back together, it emerges one has been keeping a massive secret. Simone has written a novel based on what had happened to them and, suddenly, it becomes an overnight best-seller.

The issue is, the story isn’t exclusively Simone’s. It happened to them all.

Fact and fiction begin to blur as Simone’s horrified friends discover what she’s done and look back on that night. Their friendship is once again on the brink. But what did happen?

Who stars with Jodie Whittaker in One Night?

Jodie Whittaker stars as Tess in One Night. She’s best known for playing the first female Doctor in the BBC series Doctor Who, from 2017 to 2022.

Nicole da Silva portrays novelist Simone – aka Mon – in the ITV mystery drama. The Australia actress has starred in Aussie police show Rush and prison series Wentworth.

Netflix’s Yael Stone plays Hat in One Night. Fans will recognise her as Lorna Morello from the huge American hit, Orange is the New Black.

Other stars of One Night include Australian actor Damien Strouthos. Fans of BBC’s The Tourist may remember him from starring as Marko in the Two Brothers Pictures series. Essex-born William Zappa, who now lives and works in Australia, also appears in One Night.

One Night’s Paramount+ debut

One Night originally dropped onto streaming giant Paramount+ in Australia in September 2023. Paramount then made it available to viewers in the UK and Ireland two months later.

But in February 2024, One Night suddenly disappeared from Paramount+. Frustrated viewers were quick to hit out on social media. One wrote on X: “A lot of fans are angry about this.” Another added: “Why?!” Someone else even fumed: “US peeps didn’t even get to see it yet. Urghhh!”

People were not happy! In addition to the furore, those who had been lucky enough to catch the full series before it was removed began demanding a second series.

A short-lived mystery

Paramount+ removed several international dramas from its service in February 2024, including One Night. Other shows it ditched included Serial Killer’s wife, The Burning Girls, and The Killing Kind.

Deadline reported a decision had been made at Paramount to turn its attention to “Hollywood-style” programmes that would have a wider, more global appeal.

The publication claimed CEO Pam Kaufman and CBS CEO George Cheeks told staff in an internal memo: “Hollywood franchises, films and series, which have mass global appeal.”
