By Helen Fear | Mon Mar 10 2025Ten Pound Poms series 2 has landed on BBC One and, if you're anything like us, you've binged it all the way to the ending, and now waiting for news on series 3...
Like the first run in 2023, the Michelle Keegan show proved to be the perfect Sunday night drama, with a richly woven plot, characters you can't help caring about, and a stunning location. And the fact it's based on real experiences makes the series even more heartbreaking.
Ten Pound Poms series 2 caught up with Kate, Terry and Annie after a challenging first year in Australia. Each of them faced their own harsh realities at Galgownie, which wasn't at all like the glossy brochures that tempted then over on the £10 scheme.
Here's our Ten Pound Poms series 2 ending explained, and news on series 3...
***Warning: spoilers from Ten Pound Poms series 2 ahead***

What happened to Hattie and baby Mary?
The ending of Ten Pound Poms series 2 was something of a cliffhanger, with the future of baby Mary in jeopardy.
Viewers know that Terry and Annie's daughter Pattie (Hattie Hook) arrived in Oz secretly pregnant. An unmarried mother in '50s Australia was bad enough, let alone the fact that the father - who stayed in England - was black.
Due to prejudices at the time, Pattie had to pretend she was married by wearing a wedding ring. However, after the family got on the wrong side of nasty businessman Benny Bates, he tipped off welfare officers about Pattie's "illegitimate child".
Yes, really. Being an unmarried mother with a baby at that time meant your baby could be taken away from you. Just ask poor Kate Thorne, who suffered the same fate and spent series 1 trying to track down her son.
At the end of Ten Pound Poms series 2, the Roberts endured a battle for custody of Mary. Tragically, Pattie's appeal against Mary's adoption was denied. However, the judge took sympathy and gave Terry and Annie the option to adopt Mary and bring her up as their own.
While Pattie looked thrilled at the option, the camera scanned Annie's face who looked conflicted. She had been battling for independence and women's rights throughout her time in Australia. A baby, even her own granddaughter, could put a stop to this.
While the decision will have to wait for Ten Pound Poms series 3, we'd be extremely surprised if Annie and Terry allowed Mary to be taken away.

Ten Pound Poms ending explained
Unlike the end of series 1, the second series of Ten Pound Poms ended happily for Kate and her new fiancé Robbie. Although still separated from her son Michael, she found some peace with Robbie.
This is despite the little hiccup of Robbie's ex-fling Mandy pretending she was pregnant to entrap him into marriage. Luckily, Kate soon found out the truth and burst in to the church just in time to stop their wedding.
Although the future looked bright between Kate and Robbie, there's the small matter of her promising to leave Sydney. After 'abducting' her son Michael from his adoptive parents, she was understandably deemed high risk. Michael's adoptive dad warned Kate to stay away from Sydney, something she promised to do. But will she go through with it? After all, Robbie's life, family, and work are all based in Sydney.
Meanwhile, things looked bleak for Sheila Anderson. Having survived her suicide attempt at the end of series 1, she was 'rescued' from the mental asylum by her lover JJ Walker. However, her nasty husband soon ruined her life again.
At the end of Ten Pound Poms series 2, Sheila was arrested for "escaping a psychiatric institute". Estranged husband Bill painted her as mentally unstable, knowing that no one would then believe anything she said about him. Like the fact he's a closeted homosexual, for starters.

What else happened at the end of Ten Pound Poms series 2?
- Ron was arrested after a peaceful demonstration about indigenous rights got violent, thanks to the police's brutal intervention. With his movements being monitored, it was impossible - and dangerous - for him to pursue his blossoming relationship with Maggie Skinner. Not only that, he faced being outcast by his own people for falling in love with a white woman.
- Terry exacted revenge on the unscrupulous landlord Benny Bates. He broke into his office, gained evidence of all his wrongdoings, and presented it to interested parties with power.
- Meanwhile, after Annie confessed she'd had an affair with baker Harry Brewis while Terry was at war, she assured him son Peter was his child. But do we believe her? Is Peter really Terry's child or the result of Annie's affair with Harry? We already know that Annie would do anything to keep Terry and her family together...
- Of course, the main themes of Ten Pound Poms focus on the unjust prejudices of the time. Particularly against women, and the indigenous community. White men held the power, something Annie and her new-found friends began to question.

Is there a series 3 of Ten Pound Poms?
The ending of Ten Pound Poms series 2 left plenty of loose ends for a possible series 3. Specifically about the future of baby Mary, and poor Sheila locked up again by her controlling husband.
Although the BBC has not yet confirmed a series 3 if Ten Pound Poms, we're pretty confident there'll be an announcement soon.
Although filming will have to wait until Michelle Keegan, currently pregnant with her first child, is back from maternity leave. Or could a pregnancy for Kate be written into the script?
Speaking to press at the launch of series 2 last month, Michelle admitted "there'd be a bit of a delay [if a season 3 was commissioned]."
She added: "Yeah, don't get me wrong - I love this show and I feel very lucky to be a part of it. I feel like if the audience takes with this season and there's hunger there for another season, fingers crossed the BBC will want another one. I'd definitely be up for it."
