A Very Royal Scandal on Prime Video: The cast, streaming date, and how it's different to Scoop
By Helen Fear | Mon Sep 16 2024A Very Royal Scandal dramatises one of the most memorable hours in recent TV history - when Emily Maitlis interviewed Prince Andrew.
The Amazon Prime Video series, which streams from September 2024, stars Ruth Wilson as the BBC's Newsnight presenter.
The 2019 interview was widely viewed as a car-crash. It saw disgraced Royal Prince Andrew talk to Emily Maitlis about his friendship with convicted sex offender Epstein.
It is now the subject of a new three-part drama, A Very Royal Scandal, starring Michael Sheen as Prince Andrew.
Here's everything you need to know about the series, the latest in the anthology series.
What is A Very Royal Scandal on Amazon Prime Video about?
In 2019, Emily Maitlis interviewed Prince Andrew on Newsnight about his highly-criticised friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. It's safe to say, the interview sent shockwaves around the globe. It also, according to Maitlis, caused the then Duke of York to "lose the respect of the nation".
The BBC interview did huge damage to Andrew's reputation and arguably contributed to his downfall.
Days later, he announced he was stepping back from royal duties. He explained that the Epstein scandal had become a "major disruption" to the Royal Family.
A Very Royal Scandal, which streams on Amazon Prime Video in September 2024, dramatises the events that led up to the interview, as well as the interview itself, and the aftermath.
The interview saw Prince Andrew discuss his links to Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell. He also denied having sex with then 17-year-old Virginia Giuffre, saying he was in Pizza Express in Woking on the day the encounter was meant to have taken place.
He also claimed he could not have danced with Virginia, because she'd said he'd been "sweating profusely". He then claimed he did not sweat.
Is A Very Royal Scandal worth watching?
The real-life 2019 interview between Emily Maitlis and Prince Andrew is one of the most infamous TV moments in recent history. This alone makes the series worth a watch.
Having said that, though, the original interview is currently still available to watch on BBC iPlayer. It's an hour of excruciatingly awkward TV. Unsurprisingly, the interview on YouTube now has over 10 million views.
A Very Royal Scandal follows the action of Emily Maitlis and Prince Andrew in the lead-up to the interview, as well as the ground-breaking event itself, and the aftermath. It's a testament to the powers of journalism.
The series is the latest in the highly respected A Very… Scandal anthology. It's the third in the anthology series, following 2018's A Very English Scandal, and 2021's A Very British Scandal - both exceptional dramas dramatising momentous events in UK history.
How is A Very Royal Scandal different to Scoop on Netflix?
Eagle-eyed TV fans will know that Netflix has already dramatised the Newsnight interview in the feature-length Scoop. A Very Royal Scandal, however, is a three-part drama.
While A Very Royal Scandal covers Emily Maitlis' interview from the perspective of the former BBC journalist, Netflix's Scoop was based on Newsnight producer Sam McAlister's autobiographical book, Scoops.
Emily Maitlis acts as an executive producer on the Amazon Prime Video series, A Very Royal Scandal.
She recently told The Hollywood Reporter: "I guess I threw myself into the Amazon project because I’d met [screenwriter] Jeremy Brock and I really liked his work. I got to know Ruth Wilson incredibly well. I loved Michael Sheen. So it became just a really easy choice for me. I think you have to immerse yourself into the thing that feels like the right project for you."
Also worth noting that Rufus Sewell wore prosthetics in an attempt to resemble Prince Andrew while filming Scoop. And he does so successfully. Michael Sheen, however, does not.
Who's in the cast of A Very Royal Scandal on Amazon Prime Video?
TV chameleon Michael Sheen plays the unsweaty Prince Andrew. He's known for playing former PM Tony Blair, and journalist David Frost.
Meanwhile, Luther's Ruth Wilson stars as journalist Emily Maitlis.
The Larkins actress Joanna Scanlan plays Amanda Thirsk,
Other cat members include The Crown's Alex Jennings, who plays Sir Edward Young, The Sixth Commandment's Éanna Hardwicke as Stewart Maclean, and Sherwood's Claire Rushbrook as Sarah Ferguson (genius casting).
