Coldwater on ITV: Andrew Lincoln returns to UK TV as 'secretly raging' stay-at-home dad John in the cast

Helen Fear | 12:01am Sun 14 Sep

Coldwater is arguably ITV’s first meaty thriller of the autumn season, and the channel are starting strong – having bagged Andrew Lincoln to lead the cast.

The British actor became famous playing Edgar ‘Egg’ Cook in the 90s zeitgeist drama This Life, before being lured to the States. After portraying the central character in The Walking Dead for more than a decade, he’s back.

In the ITV six-part series, Andrew portrays a father-of-two, who feels emasculated after failing to intervene in a violent incident at a London playground. As a result, he subsequently moves his family to the rural Scottish idyll of Coldwater. But he soon discovers that the fictional town is so full of dangerous secrets, he’ll wish he’d stayed in London…

Here’s everything you need to know about the cast of Coldwater on ITV, including who plays John’s sinister new neighbour. Don’t be surprised to see so many comedic actors in the line-up, either, this is a darkly comic thriller that will make you laugh, too.

Andrew Lincoln leads the cast of Coldwater on ITV as John

London-born Andrew Lincoln, 51, plays depressed dad John in Coldwater. ITV describe the character as as “middle-aged, with two young children”. He is “at a point in his life where he’s examining everything” and his ”alpha’ new neighbour doesn’t exactly help settle John’s mind.

Of course, actor Andrew should be very well known to TV viewers. In fact, Coldwater marks his long-awaited return to British TV after more than a decade in America filming The Walking Dead.

Having cut his teeth playing Egg in BBC drama This Life between 1996 and 1997, he went on to portray Simon Casey in the popular C4 drama Teacher.

Between 2005 and 2006, Andrew played university lecturer Robert Bridge in the supernatural series Afterlife. He starred opposite Lesley Sharp who played medium Alison Mundy. After portraying Edgar in the 2009 Tom Hardy version of Wuthering Heights, and Hugh Collinson in Strike Back, Andrew went on to win the life-changing role of Rick Grimes in Emmy-winning apocalyptic drama The Walking Dead.

He played the zombie-slayer between The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live. Andrew initially left Atlanta-filmed The Walking Dead to be closer to his family, who live in the UK.

Film fans will know him from his roles in Love Actually, Human Traffic, Enduring Love, and Made in Dagenham.

Indira Varma plays John’s wife Fiona

Bath-born Indira Varma stars as John’s sexually-frustrated wife and famous chef Fiona – who sees through their new neighbour Tommy straight away.

The actress, 51, is perhaps most famous for playing ill-fated Ellaria Sand in Game of Thrones. Yep, she was the lover of Pedro Pascal’s character Prince Oberyn Martell. So, if you’re part of the (ever growing) population that adores him, you’ll probably be a bit jealous…

Indira is also known for portraying Niobe in the award-winning period drama Rome. She played the beautiful wife of Lucius Vorenus in the HBO series, which ran from

EWEN BREMNER as Tommy in Coldwater

Ewen Bremner portrays John’s neighbour Tommy

Scottish Ewen Bremner, 53, stars as John’s neighbour Tommy. Married to a vicar, and a bible group leader himself, he comes across as charming at first… But he’s hiding a rather sinister secret.

Trainspotting fans will know the Edinburgh-born actor best for his comedic turn as Spud in the 1996 film and its 2017 sequel.

He’s been in tonnes of other films, too, including Guy Richie’s Snatch, in which he played a street thug called Mullet. Movie fans might remember his roles in Pearl Harbor, Black Hawk Down, The Reckoning, Match Point, Snowpiercer, and Wonder Woman 1984.

He’s less frequently seen on TV, so his straight role in Coldwater is a pretty rare one. His very first small screen role was playing Jason in a 1990 episode of Taggart, and he went on to pop up in episodes of Screen Two, A Touch of Frost, Alleyn Mysteries, and The Bill.

Best known for his comedic roles, Ewen then appeared as Jockey in the sketch show Harry Enfield and Chums. Other notable TV roles in the 90s/00s included Michael Fry in The Secret World of Michael Fry, John Twain D’Wain in Langt fra Las Vegas, and Johnny in Coming Up.

Eve Myles stars as Tommy’s wife Rebecca

Welsh actress Eve Myles, 47, stars as Tommy’s vicar wife Rebecca – who doesn’t actually believe in God – in the cast of Coldwater. But we wouldn’t blame you for feeling a tad confused about the character. After all, Eve is currently playing a morally-ambigious – and super-rich – businesswoman called Fran in The Guest over on BBC One.

We know we’re in good hands with Eve, though, as she’s well known for her roles in thrillers, including Keeping Faith, Broadchurch, We Hunt Together, and Hijack.

Powys-born Eve has been on our screens since 1999, when she first popped up as Tracy in Hang the DJ. After small roles in TV series such as Nuts and Bolts, Tales from Pleasure Beach, and Colditz, Eve won the coveted role of Gwen Cooper in three episodes of Doctor Who. Her fans will know that she reprised the role in Torchwood, a spin-off of Doctor Who, between 2006 and 2011.

More recently, she’s played DS Lola Franks in the mostly underrated We Hunt Together, and Alice Sinclair in the thriller Hijack. Earlier this year, the mum-of-three portrayed DCI Jeanette Kilburn in The Crow Girl. Her character hunted for a killer targeting young men.

Samuel then went on to play Kyle in the first series of The Teacher in 2022 on Channel 5. He played school pupil Kyle, who accused his teacher (played by Sheridan Smith) of sexually assaulting him. That same year, he starred as Aaron in the highly-rated C5 series Somewhere Boy.

Most recently, Samuel played ‘Boy’ in the brilliant Daisy May Copper comedy Am I Being Unreasonable? His character kept popping up throughout series 1 and 2, and we eventually found out he’d witnessed a shocking murder.

He’s actually been on our screens for more than five decades, ever since he played Frank Garson in the 1970 The Wednesday Play. Subsequent early roles came in Dr. Finlay’s Casebook, and Cloud Howe.

Lois Chimimba as Catriona in Coldwater

Cast of Coldwater on ITV: Lois Chimimba stars as Catriona

Scottish actress Lois Chimimba plays Catriona in Coldwater. But she’s probably best known for her roles in the thrillers Vigil, Nightsleeper, and The One. You could say she’s developing a bit of a niche…

She made her small screen debut playing Beth Forbes in several episode of Holby City in 2014, before going on to play Karen in the Jodie Whitaker nursing drama Trust Me. After several years as a jobbing actress, Lois appeared as Catherine Streeter in A Discovery of Witches, before winning arguably her biggest role to date.

In 2021, she took on the role of Hannah Bailey in the Netflix psychological thriller The One. The series followed a DNA researcher who discovered a way to find the perfect partner, and subsequently created a bold new matchmaking service. But, of course, the fairytale turned to a nightmare when a man died.

That same year, Lois played Tara Kierly in Vigil series 1, and Carrie McAndrew in Shetland. As well as appearing in Sex Education! It was certainly a very busy year for Lois, as she also started playing Claire in the comedy drama The Outlaws, a role she returned to for series 2 in 2022.

Other significant roles include DC June Ayoade in the excellent true crime drama The Thief, His Wife and the Canoe, Amy in Still Up, and Erin Connolly in Nightsleeper. She’s lent her voice to several podcasts, too, including Doctor Who: Redacted, and The War Master.

Her film roles have included a nurse in the 2018 TV drama Care, Becks in Beep, and the main character of Lucy in the Frankenstein-esque 2.0 Lucy.

How old is the actress who plays Catriona?

Lois Chimimba is actually 34 years of age. This is a fair bit older than her character. In Coldwater, much is made of Catriona’s youth. We don’t want to reveal too much here, but the barmaid and shopworker is supposed to be 25, nine years younger than the actress who plays her. She mostly hands around with Tommy and Rebecca’s son Cameron, who is 19.

Catriona even makes jibes about John’s wife Fiona being “old”, and “looking good for her age”. In fact, Fiona is played by Indira Varma, who is 51 in real life. So only 16 years older than actress Lois. And, yes, she does look fantastic for ANY age!

The age discrepancy might be jarring for some viewers. In The Bay series 3, actor Nadeem Islam portrayed teenager Jamal Rahman. But he was actually 25 years in real life – quite a bit older than his character. And viewers were quick to point that out.
