This City is Ours will be back on BBC One for a series 2, and cast and crew have started filming in Liverpool.

The brilliant crime drama first aired earlier this year, and saw Sean Bean perfectly cast as organised crime boss Ronnie. Although he didn’t last long – thanks to his wing man Michael who decided he deserved his spot in the limelight…

The series followed Michael as he attempted to take over Ronnie’s business. While also battling Ronnie’s son Jamie, and trying to consider a future with his girlfriend. Critics likened it to The Sopranos, Kin, Animal Kingdom, and Gangs of London.

After a pretty explosive ending to This City is Ours series 1, the gang will be back for a series 2. Here’s everything we know so far, including the very popular Liverpudlian who is joining the cast.

Is there a series 2 of This City is Ours?

The BBC has confirmed that there WILL be a series 2 of This City is Ours, and we’re not at all surprised. The show was very well-received. And, although series 1 finished satisfyingly, there’s still plenty of scope for more.

There’s the fallout from Ricardo’s murder, how Jamie handles the business, and if Michael manages to walk away. We want to know more about Micheal’s backstory, too. How did he start working with Ronnie, and where are his real family?

Stephen Butchard, This City is Ours creator, said: “We have all been blown away by the incredibly positive response to This City is Ours. I can’t thank the audience enough for their time and emotional investment. My heartfelt thanks also […] for this opportunity to do it all over again! See you soon!”

Sian McWilliams, executive producer on This City is Ours, added: “We are so delighted to be diving back into Stephen Butchard’s brilliant underworld of Liverpool crime with our wonderful collaborators at the BBC. After the tumultuous events of the season one finale, the gang rivalries and betrayals have escalated to new levels, new ones have just begun, and there is a lot of unfinished business!”

Meanwhile, Lindsay Salt, Director of BBC Drama, said: “Things are only just getting started for this very special series.”

Two new cast members join the Liverpool crime drama

Great news for fans of This City is Ours, as famous Liverpudlian Shaun Evans will be joining the cast of series 2. He’ll play former gangster Ozzie Thompson, who is recently out of prison.

Shaun, 45, is best known for playing a young Endeavour Morse in the ITV drama series Endeavour. He also portrayed Coxswain Elliot Glover in Vigil.

He made his name playing John Paul Keating in Teachers in the early 00s, before going on to appear in Ashes to Ashes, The Take, Whitechapel, Silk, and The Last Weekend.

More recently, he gave a chilling performance as serial killer John Sweeney in Until I Kill You.

Spanish actor, Álvaro Morte will also be joining the cast. He’ll play Felipe Guzman, a member of the Colombian cartel. Felipe is also the younger brother of Ricardo, who was murdered at the end of the first series. Over here, the 50-year-old is probably best known for his roles in Netflix’s Money Heist, and The Wheel of Time.

Of course, This City is Ours cast members James Nelson-Joyce and Hannah Onslow will also be returning as Diana and Michael.

Jack McMullen will be back as Jamie Phelan, as will Mike Noble as Banksey, Julie Graham as Elaine Phelan, and Saoirse-Monica Jackson as Cheryl Crawford.

Also returning for series two are Adam Abbou as Freddie, Laura Aikman as Rachel Duffy, Kevin Harvey as Bobby Duffy, and Darci Shaw as Melissa Sullivan.
