Following on from the huge success of Netflix's chilling true crime series Dahmer in 2022, Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story explores the infamous murders of José and Kitty Menéndez, who were slain by their sons Lyle and Erik in 1989. When police arrived at the family’s Beverly Hills mansion, Lyle, 21, and Erik, 18, claimed to have just discovered their parents after returning home from the cinema. In the months that followed, Lyle and Erik spent their inheritance with exuberance. This aroused suspicion from investigators, who eventually arrested the pair after Erik's therapist's mistress told police about their involvement. In sensational televised trial scenes in 1993, the brothers accused their parents of sexual abuse and substance addiction. Little proof was provided and they were eventually sentenced to life in prison for two counts of first degree murder and conspiracy to murder.

Early reviews from critics are already favourable, commending the show's top tier cast, which includes Michael Sheen as Prince Andrew and Ruth Wilson as Emily Maitlis. The real Maitlis serves as an Executive Producer on the series, which explores both the interview’s prelude and fallout, as well as delving deeper into the psyche of the Prince than previous portrayals of the scandal.
