Ludwig, BBC One's new comedy series, may sound more like a posh dog, but it's actually a brilliantly bonkers twist on a very popular format - the murder mystery.

The new detective drama puts tongue firmly in cheek as it follows anti-hero John 'Ludwig' Taylor in the aftermath of his twin brother's disappearance.

With such an original concept, combined with a very talented cast, tvguide.co.uk predicts a series destined to become a hit.

What is Ludwig about? What's the plot?

Ludwig is a brand new comedy drama series, commissioned by BBC One. It follows nerdy, reclusive puzzle setter John Ludwig Taylor whose life is upended when his identical twin James disappears.

Crucially, twin James was a DCI in the local police force, and his job undoubtedly holds the key to his disappearance.

In a bid to discover his brother's whereabouts, John reluctantly leaves his life of solitude.

Drafted in by his pushy sister-in-law Lucy, John reluctantly assumes his brother's identity as a detective on Cambridge's major crimes squad. But will the easily-spooked John be able to find any clues to his brother's whereabouts?

Having somehow infiltrated the Major Investigations Team by just turning up and looking exactly like his twin brother, John uses his puzzle knowledge to gather information...

The BBC tells us: "John has never married; never had a family and never really ventured further than his own front door. Without a computer, mobile phone or even a television, he lives in quiet solitude, designing puzzles for a living, under the nom-de-plume of 'Ludwig'.

"However, filling the shoes of your identical twin is one thing - when your twin also happens to be a successful DCI leading Cambridge's busy inner-city major crimes team the stakes are much higher. John may be a master of all things cryptic, but can he crack the biggest puzzle of his life?"

How many episodes is BBC One's Ludwig?

Ludwig is six episodes in total. Each episode is one hour long, and will go out every Wednesday from September 25, 2024.

In each episode, John 'Ludwig' takes on a new case, as well as attempting to crack the overarching storyline of James' disappearance.

Where was Ludwig filmed?

BBC One comedy drama Ludwig was filmed in and around London, as well as Cambridge.

It's predominantly set in Cambridge, and surrounding areas. The cast of the new show filmed around St John's College, as well as the Millpond and the River Cam.

Comedian and actor David Mitchell read history at Peterhouse, Cambridge, so has a long relationship with the area.

In fact, David formed comedy duo Mitchell and Webb, with Robert Webb, after meeting him while performing with Footlights – the University of Cambridge student comedy society.

Ludwig is a Big Talk Studios Production in association with That Mitchell and Webb Company for BBC One and BBC iPlayer.

Who wrote Ludwig?

Mark Brotherhood wrote Ludwig. Mark is known for writing episodes of Father Brown, Cold Feet, Mount Pleasant, and Shameless.

At a press launch for Ludwig, David Mitchell revealed how he was convinced to come on board.

He revealed that the idea came to him as a pitch document from writer Mark Brotherhood pre-Covid, and that he immediately found the idea "funny and intriguing".

He added that he's "always loved murder mysteries", saying: "I think when it can have a comic spin as well, that's even better. Because I like a murder mystery sort of puzzle, a whodunnit, but I don't love watching things that are horrific and gritty and sort of remind you of the frailty of the human life."
