What is The Madame Blanc Mysteries on Netflix about?

The wholesome series – co-written by and starring Sally Lindsay – follows antiques dealer-turned-amateur-sleuth Jean White. It’s co-written with Shameless star Sue Vincent, who also appears as Gloria.

Set in France, viewers are introduced to Jean (Lindsay) as she rebuilds her life in the fictional village of Sainte Victoire after the death of her husband Rory. She soon realises she has a knack for investigating and becomes a rather in-demand PI.

Jean subsequently solves multiples mysteries and murders in the South of France (although it’s actually filmed in Malta).

Talking about her inspiration for the show, Sally Lindsay explained: “I remember sitting in my caravan in rainy Manchester filming [Channel 5 thriller] Cold Call thinking it would be nice to be somewhere sunnier. And that was a big influence on where The Madame Blanc Mysteries would be set.”

Sally also shared that she wanted an easy, cosy crime, adding: “I wanted the show to be an hour of TV that lets you make a cup of tea and escape. I hope you love all the people there, you love the world, and there’s sunshine too!”

The Madame Blanc Mysteries reviews – is it any good?

Jean White and her band of merry gentlefolk have an army of loyal fans – and for good reason. As cosy crimes go, it’s one of the best. After all, it wouldn’t have been commissioned for four series if people weren’t watching it and enjoying it!

Inews.co.uk said: “So what have viewers come for? Well, there’s some agreeable light comedy performed by reassuringly familiar actors.”

Decider said: “Stream this. If you’re in the mood for one of those mystery shows that you can watch and try to solve along with the main character, The Madame Blanc Mysteries fills that bill very well.”

The Telegraph said: “The Madame Blanc Mysteries won’t win any awards for trail-blazing originality but it’s witty, feel-good fare.”

Meanwhile, Mail Online added: “Former Coronation Street actress Sally Lindsay writes and stars in The Madame Blanc Mysteries, a refreshingly light and satisfying detective serial set in the South of France. With a regular cast of eccentrics, an ingenious murder in each episode and an entertaining balance of romance and bickering between the sleuth and her sidekick, the show mixes all the right ingredients in the perfect proportions.”

Is there a series 5?

At the time of writing, a spokesperson for the show revealed there was no announcement as yet about future series of the Sally Lindsay series.

However, we’d be very surprised if the series wasn’t recommissioned due to its popularity. Like crime dramas including Unforgotten, Shetland, The Bay, and The Good Ship Murder, The Madame Blanc Mysteries has the potential to run for years and years.

Sally Lindsay has revealed she will continue to play the role of Jean White for as long as viewers still want her on screen. She said: “I’ll write it as long as they want it. I won’t quit when I’m on a high.”

She continued: “I love it so much. I will do it until they want me to not do it, to be honest, because it’s such a special thing in my life. It’s such a part of our lives now. And it’s great for us because Steve [my husband] does the music as well, so it’s something we share. And the boys [twin sons Victor and Louie] come out on our holidays there, and it’s just brilliant.”

Sally concluded by saying: “It’s just really special, so I’ll drag it out as long as they want me to. So hopefully it will carry on.”
